North Port’s King Plastic tests new direction, hiring ‘anybody who’s interested’

By CRAIG GARRETT STAFF WRITER NORTH PORT — Holly Shearer had never done what she did Thursday. The human resources director for King Plastic Corp. in North Port — the city’s largest private employer — Shearer and administrative assistant Natali Donnelly parked themselves at a folding table behind the main office off Toledo Blade Boulevard to await job-seekers. The company had posted entry-level jobs, a downstream technician position that starts at $15 an hour. But this is the twilight of the pandemic. Even in a heated jobs market, it’s tough finding workers, Shearer said — seemingly all employers are hiring, especially in that $15 range. So, King Plastic after 53 years in Sarasota County held its first pop-up job fair Thursday and will hold another next Thursday. Extending interview hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. is an even greater lure, she added. “We’d love to have any-body who’s interested,” said Shearer, who had questionnaires and a follow-up brain-teaser with a measuring tape and a rect-angle of half-inch plastic. Job-seekers were to follow a trail of bunched balloons on the campus to find the two women at the folding table. “We’re willing to give anybody a shot,” she said. King Plastic, of course, is in the same pickle as other employers in Florida and across the country. Job vacancies in March had soared nationally to about 15 million. North Port alone is awash in stories of fast food restaurants closing or cutting back hours due to lack of help. The dilemma is that many workers in the pandemic had hit the road, chose to remain home as their kids learned remotely, or collected hefty unemployment checks. That left the world upside down, some workers in today’s market not sure which direction to turn. And lower-wage workers also face a new crisis: afford-able housing is evaporating in a super hot market. North Port is just now seeing more modest housing opening or under construction. Mel Thomas, North Port’s economic development di-rector, said another dilemma is that women are slower in seeking jobs or returning to an old one, as childcare is expensive. That’s why employers such as PGT Innovations in Nokomis had offered signing bonuses, and others offer daycare or improved workplace environments, Thomas added, suggesting that employers recruit teens, perhaps scout trade schools, “to do things we’ve never done before.” By mid-morning Thursday, Shearer awaited her first interviewee. Miami Museum Garage Made with King ColorCore®

The façade along the 41st street entrance and exit of the Miami Museum Garage is designed by Nicolas Buffe, a French born artist. The black and white illustrations are made with 1/2” gauge, 48” x 96” size sheets of King ColorCore®, the multi-color engravable polymer sheet.

 The Miami Design District is known for its sleek modern architecture, upscale interior design stores, and art galleries. It is the home of luxury fashion, celebrity-chef restaurants, and more – making it one of the world’s greatest shopping areas. The Design District surrounds visitors with some of the best architecture in the country, right down to the award-winning Museum Garage.

 The seven-story building has a mix of retail spaces, public spaces, and parking for approximately 800 vehicles. Miami Museum Garage features distinctly bold and eclectic styles crafted by five artists from all over the world. The façade along the 41st street entrance and exit of the building is designed by Nicolas Buffe, a French born artist. Buffe’s intricate 2D and 3D elements are crafted from laser-cut metals and fiber resin plastic depicting elephants, gargoyles and caryatids, and stone carvings of draped figures used as pillars for Greek Revival buildings. Four 23-foot-tall sculptures stand at the entrance and exit of the garage. The black and white illustrations and parking sign are made with 1/2” gauge 48” x 96” sheets of King ColorCore® polymer sheets in black/white/black and white/black/white.

Initial Situation
A mix of designers from around the world were brought together using the exquisite corpse method (from the original French term cadavre exquis), which involves a collection of images assembled by various artists with no regard or knowledge of what the other artists have drawn, producing one image whose components don’t necessarily match, but flow together as one playful composition. Each participating artist was assigned an area and depth to build out and given free rein to create fully individual designs. The result is a unique and modern architectural version of the exquisite corpse.

Task
The artist, Nicolas Buffe, and architect, Timothy Haahs & Associates, Inc. specified King ColorCore®, the multi-color engravable high-density polyethylene sheet with multiple layers of contrasting colors for the Miami Museum Garage.

Solution
King ColorCore® is a versatile multi-color engravable high-density polyethylene sheet with multiple layers of contrasting colors. It is a superior homogeneous sheet, a product of a unique state-of-the-art continuous process called Polyfusion, and manufactured to the highest standards in the industry. King ColorCore® has a matte finish on both sides of the sheet. It is environmentally stabilized to withstand the harshest outdoor conditions. King ColorCore® will not rust, delaminate or rot when exposed to UV, humidity or water. King ColorCore® is made with high-impact-resistant polymer to handle more abuse than conventional sign materials. Its thin cap layers and bright primary colors make it ideal for signage, marine, playground and recreational applications. For maximum versatility, standard colors are made to coordinate with King ColorBoard®. The polymer sheet never needs painting or refinishing, works like wood and it is easy to fabricate using common woodworking tools and techniques. The material is easy to engrave and machine, as the cap is approximately .050” thick.

KING STARBOARD® HELPS KIDS LEARN ABOUT NUTRITION THROUGH LEARNING GARDENS

Kimbal Musk, younger brother of Elon Musk and co-founder of The Kitchen Community, a 501c3 nonprofit, is connecting kids to real food by creating Learning Gardens in schools across America. Learning Gardens teaches children about food, healthy eating, lifestyle choices and the environment through lesson plans and activities tied into existing school curriculum.

Initially a regional program, The Kitchen Community built 260 USA Learning Gardens across Chicago, IL; Denver, CO; Los Angeles, CA; and Memphis, TN. The Kitchen Community then became part of a new nonprofit called Big Green, and this is where King StarBoard® became part of the story.

Big Green reached out to Colorado Plastic Products, an IAPD distributor based in Louisville, CO, USA. They were looking for a material that would hold up to outdoor elements and exposure to hundreds of children touching, handling and working with the raised flower beds that are part of the Learning Gardens program.

Charlie Waychoff, a member of Colorado Plastic Products’ inside sales team, recommended King Starboard, a marine grade polymer that is environmentally stabilized and withstands the harshest outdoor elements.

It does not warp, rot or delaminate when exposed to humidity or water. Waychoff knew King StarBoard could be fabricated just like wood and create a finished product that would be practical and look great. “King Plastic Corporation helped us a lot on this job because they could combine their custom color options with a 5′ x 10′ sheet size. It was great working with them,” said Waychoff.

From that first recommendation, Colorado Plastic Products started fabricating raised beds, seating and shade for Big Green’s Learning Gardens, making them attractive places to teach. All table tops, bench seats and signs are now made with King StarBoard in custom green colors, reinforcing Big Green’s image and goals for a generation of children who will eat their way to good health and live in a healthy environment.

According to Michael Fabbri, national sales manager for King Plastic Corporation, “It is always refreshing to learn that your product is in an application that is part of a bigger plan and that plan is having a positive impact on children’s lives.”

We are frequently asked how to apply and use adhesives with our products.  We want to remind you that generally, bonding polyethylene with adhesives does not result in a permanent structural bond, like mechanical fastening or welding. Please determine the suitability of using an adhesive yourself with proper testing.

Adhesives do not result in a permanent structural bond. It is preferable to mechanically fasten or weld.

When an adhesive is necessary, you can use a product such as the following:

3M’s Scotch-Weld DP-8005

Chem-Set™ 6105 Polyolefin Bonder

Using Adhesives

Tip #3

Make sure you have everything you need for the flame treatment:

A sheet of one hundred and twenty-grit sandpaper

A cleaning solvent such as Acetone, Toluene or Alcohol

A propane torch

Your selected adhesive of choice

Appropriate clamps to secure the bonded parts without damaging the finish of the King StarBoard® material

Tip #4

Proper surface preparation of your polymer is critical when using adhesives.

What is the King DuraStyle® Custom Cabinet Door Program?

King DuraStyle® Custom Cabinet Door Program combines King StarBoard® ST, the environmentally stabilized polymer building sheet, with designer styles and state-of-the-art CNC fabrication. The doors have a matte gloss finish and are developed to withstand the harshest outdoor conditions.

The doors are made with genuine King StarBoard® ST and will not rust, delaminate or rot when exposed to UV, humidity or water. King DuraStyle® custom cabinet doors never need painting or refinishing. Ideal for outdoor areas where there may be water, high humidity and moisture. The doors will perfectly match the cabinetry you build using King StarBoard® ST.

The King DuraStyle® Custom Cabinet Door Program puts precision door and panel fabrication within reach of cabinet makers that either don’t have the resources to CNC route the doors or don’t want to mix polymer shavings into their wood waste stream.   2. SELECT DOOR/DRAWER STYLE(S): Reference the King DuraStyle® Custom Cabinet Door Program Catalog to Select Door/Drawer Styles(s)
    Options include 6 shaker styles, 15 raised panel styles, 4 beadboard styles, and 3 slab styles
  3. SELECT COLOR(S): 10 Designer Colors Available
    Black, Mocha Brown, Nutmeg, Indigo, Charcoal Gray, Slate Gray, Dolphin Gray, Sunshade, Seafoam, White/White
  4. INCLUDE ELEVATION PLANS: Acceptable files are PDF, JPG, TIFF, and DXF

Summit Metro Parks Signs

Hampton Hills Metro Park is approximately 655 acres. The new outdoor signs include an entrance park sign and new Mountain Bike trailhead signs to indicate the trail is open or closed. The signs are made with 3/4” gauge, 48” x 96” size sheets of King ColorCore®, the multi-color engravable polymer sheet, in a custom color of brown/yellow/brown. The main entrance sign has a bright yellow, reflective aluminum component, and routed leaf to match the Summit Metro Parks branding.
